Pull Point is a single-handed tape dispenser concept that advances the functionality and aesthetics of the traditional Scotch Magic Tape dispenser. Ease of use with an easy-on-the-eyes design allows this tool to live on the desktop rather than in the drawer.
Problem
The Scotch Magic Tape requires two hands for use, forcing the user to take both hands off their project which needs holding down.
How might we…
design a Scotch tape dispenser that only requires one hand to dispense tape?
Idea Generation
I quickly developed low-fidelity concepts in Miro, then re-grouped and iterated on the best ideas in Procreate. From this stage I could identify the strongest features to turn into concepts.
Development
Three concepts were developed in Procreate.
Thumb Cut
Tape dispensed from bottom
Thumb switch cuts tape
Warm, round shape
Internal mechanical parts
Wire Frame
Utilizes finger technique for single-hand use
Elegant tape stand
No moving parts
Multiple stationary arrangements
Pull Point
Pull dispenser on wheel releases tape
Tilt to point to cut
Easy to use and load
Simple design
Inspiration
At this stage, I had the idea to explore colorful industrial sheet metal forms as inspiration to bring a new aesthetic to the dated existing design.
Form Development
In CAD, I was able to develop my initial concepts as well as explore folded sheet metal designs. Render comparisons confirmed some of my initial concept direction.
Chosen Direction
Prototypes helped me understand how the concepts felt and worked, ultimately leading me to the final concept direction.
Single hand use worked efficiently.
Final Concept
The Pull Point reimagines the traditional Scotch Magic Tape dispenser with a focus on one-handed operation and intuitive use. Its sleek, open-face design elevates this essential tool from a desk drawer staple to a stylish desk accessory.
